Dermatology (Skin) clinic
Dr Pippa Brookes-White recently achieved the qualification: Diploma in Practical Dermatology (distinction) June 2018. This was a 2 year post graduate online distance learning course at Cardiff University.
Dermatology can often be a diagnostic challenge. Dermatology needs excellent photographs!
Dr Brookes-White is happy to take referrals to help diagnose and manage your skin complaint. If you are worried you may have skin cancer then please be in touch. It is vital for any skin complaint and particularly for suspected skin cancers that you or someone else you know is able to provide sharply in focus photographs that can be e-mailed to the practice.
At least 4 are required:
2 close ups as close as you can get (less than 5cm to show the architecture of the skin surface to help diagnosis).
A photo from 25cm that shows the skin lesion in the centre with approximately 10cm either side (the nature of the surrounding skin helps with diagnosis).
Finally a picture that shows clearly which body part the lesion/rash belongs to.
Excellent quality pictures usually taken on a smart phone as described above are needed as often we use the dermatology e-mail advice service from the Churchill hospital. The ability of Pippa or the department of dermatology to diagnose you skin complaint/rash/skin lesion/cancer depends entirely on your ability to provide good quality pictures especially in these times of COVID-19.
Unfortunately dermoscopy (looking at your skin with a special magnifier to help diagnose your skin lesion) poses a high risk for COVID-19 transmission. It would require the doctor to get very close to you (20cm) so this for obvious reasons is to be avoided.
Dr Brookes-White runs a skin clinic on a Thursday afternoon once a month (currently suspended due to COVID-19) to treat precancerous skin lesions (actinic keratoses) with cryotherapy (freezing treatment). We expect you to treat your own warts and verrucas using over the counter methods as there is no NHS funding for us to treat these. In the exceptional circumstance one is very painful then this will be considered on a case by case basis.
Please note if you have been told you have a seborrheic wart, otherwise known as a senile wart or seborrheic keratosis (these are very very common!!) they are harmless and of cosmetic concern only and will not be treated on the NHS unless for some reason rubbing or itching.
If you have been referred to Dr Pippa Brookes-White by your GP and she suspects you need an urgent 2 week wait cancer pathway referral, she will personally deal with this immediately. For all other routine referrals to secondary care she will advise you & your own GP will be required to complete the necessary paperwork.
